IJGT Georgia Open at Savannah Quarters C.C. - Final Results

The best junior golfers in the southeast traveled to Savannah Quarters Country Club the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Georgia Open this weekend. Despite some low temperatures and numerous water hazards, the IJGT Georgia Open at Savannah Quarters Country Club showcased some great junior golfers.

Taking home the first place title in the Boys 15-19 Division was 17-year old Shota Ozaki of Tokyo, Japan. In order to capture the IJGT title, Ozaki would have to fend off previous champions, Mickey Werenski of South Hadley, Mass. and Manuel Velez of Panama City, Panama. This was the first tournament of the season for Ozaki.

Ozaki began round one perfectly, shooting an even-par 72 to end the day. After the eighth hole, Ozaki hit his stride, finishing the last ten holes with ten consecutive pars. Heading into round two, Ozaki was tied for second place with Velez, one stroke behind Werenski. During the final round, Ozaki would close the gap between himself and Werenski with a stunning seven birdies and three consecutive pars to finish round two with an incredible score of 3-under-par 69 and a total score of 141 to capture the title.

Ozaki's short game was the key to his success this weekend at Savannah Quarters Country Club especially for his 3-under-par 69 on Sunday. "I felt very good. My short game was perfect. I had twenty-two putts!" Ozaki said.

Finishing in second was Werenski with an overall tournament score of 145. Rounding out the Boys 15-19 Division was John Conley of Leesburg, Va. with an overall tournament score of 146. Ozaki's 3-under-par 69 on Sunday earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, which is given to the player who records the lowest score during Sunday's final round.

Finishing in first place in the Girls Division was Thamonpat Siriko of Bangkok, Thailand. Siriko has made several appearances in IJGT tournaments, although never took home the first place title until Sunday. Finishing in fourth place in her last IJGT tournament, Siriko was determined to capture a trophy this weekend.

Siriko got off to a strong start during round one with four birdies and five consecutive pars, finding herself in first place going into round two with a score of 1-under-par 71. Despite a few bogeys on her first few holes, Siriko would remain calm and hold on to her first place lead with the help of two birdies and two consecutive pars to finish with a round two score of 77, giving her an overall score of 148.

"I played really good the first day to shoot 1-under-par. This was my first time winning in the United States," said Siriko when asked about how she felt over the weekend.

Finishing in second was Cake Phuchanbanchob of Chiang Mai, Thailand with an overall tournament score of 152. Rounding out the Girls Division in a tie for third place was Ana Paula Valdes of Morelia, Mexico andRei Nakatani of Tokyo, Japan with an overall tournament score of 153.

Phuchanbanchob's even-par 72 on Sunday earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, which is given to the player who records the lowest score during Sunday's final round.

Taking home the first place title in the Boys 14 & Under Division was 14-year-old Davis Shore of Knoxville, Tenn. This was also Shore's first appearance in an IJGT tournament this season. In order to capture the first place title he would have to take down previous champion Tennoshin Ogawa of Ichinomiya-shi, Japan.

Round one proved to be a solid round for Shore, shooting a round one total of 3-over-par 75 with the help of three birdies and four consecutive pars. Heading into round two, Shore trailed Ogawa by one stroke. Shore would close the gap easily with the help of three birdies and an outstanding seven consecutive pars to finish round two with a score of 2-under-par 70 and an overall score of 145. Shore's 145 was more than enough to capture the first place trophy, finishing six strokes ahead of second place.

Shore knew he had to improve on his first round score in order to come out on top on Sunday. "I was expecting to play pretty good because I had a triple and a double the first day. So I was thinking to shoot 75 with a triple and a double, I can do a lot better... I played pretty solid, and I just played my game," he said.

Finishing in a tie for second was Daulet Tuleubayev of Almaty, Kazakhstan and Ogawa with overall tournament scores of 151.
