Final Results - IJGT Georgia Open at Savannah Harbor

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the Georgia Junior Feb. 23-24 at The Club at Savannah Harbor. The IJGT Georgia Junior at Savannah Harbor featured 78 elite junior golfers from all over the world. Friday's heavy rain and frigid temperatures made the course extra challenging for all of the competitors over the weekend.

The Boys 15-19 Division was the most competitive division of the tournament with the top 3 spots being separated by the smallest of margins, as Austin McCulloch of Alexandria, Minn. and Ewen Ferguson of Hilton Head Island, S.C. both posted an even-par 144 on the weekend, which put them tied for second place. The biggest surprise of all was Will Miles of Hilton Head S. C. who overcame a four stroke deficit behind first round leader Chris Magi of Montreal, Canada.

Miles took home his first championship victory in dramatic fashion:"I knew it was going to take under par to win, so I played aggressive, but smart aggressive," he said. "I didn't go at all the flags, but I picked the right spots to go for it."

Miles, who hadn't previously won a title, really wanted to bring home a first place finish at the Georgia Junior. "After finishing second in the past two tournaments it feels so good to finally bring home a first place finish," said Miles.

With his 2-under-par 70 on Saturday, Magi earned himself the Lo-Pro KENTWOOL Socks Award which goes to the player who has the lowest first round score at every IJGT tournament. In addition to his second place finish, McCulloch's final round score of 4-under-par 68 was the best score on Sunday earning him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Jan Schneider of Erlangen, Germany took home his second IJGT victory in only his third event on U.S. soil. The weather seemed to have little effect on Schneider's play; he posted an even-par 72 on Saturday in the soaking wet conditions. His impressive opening round was good enough to give him the lead heading into Sunday.

"It's always good to have the lead after the first round, but I knew the second round was going to be tough," said Schneider.

Schneider's second round was one of the most exciting to watch with second place finisher Will Thomson of Pittsford, N.Y. nipping at his heels all day long. Thomson was able to equal Schneider's Sunday total, but his one shot deficit from Saturday turned out to be the final margin, leaving him with his second straight runner-up finish by one stroke in as many weeks. James Wohler of Savannah, Ga. rounded out the top three in the division with a 151 total on the weekend.

"It was a hard second round for me with Will [Thomson] being paired up with me," said Schneider. "Will is such a good player, so I knew the second round was going to be tough."

In the Girls Division, Ceha Lee of Bundang-Gu of South Korea fought off stiff competition to take home her first IJGT title of the season by posting a total score of 1-over-par 145 on the weekend. Lee, who was being pursued by second place finisher Cake Phuchanbanchob of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and third place finisher Maggie Ashmore of Kingston, Ga., began the weekend with a three stroke lead, and never looked back, as she took home the division title by two strokes.

"I just tried to stay calm going into Sunday," said Lee. "I acted like I wasn't in the lead, because knowing I was leading would make me feel more nervous."

Lee's 1-under-par 71 on Saturday, earned her the Lo-Pro KENTWOOL Socks Award which goes to the player who has the lowest first round score at every IJGT tournament. The Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award went to Phuchanbanchob and Ayaka Nakayama of Kanagawa, Japan. Both shot even-par 72 on Sunday at Savannah Harbor.

The next IJGT Event will be Family Weekend at Port Royal Mar. 2-3 on Hilton Head Island, S.C. The IJGT's Family Weekend will see families traveling from all over the globe to participate.
